Our Sins Can Affect Generations And Nations

Text: 1 Samuel 8:1-7

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us.

And Samuel prayed unto the Lord. And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Overview:

  • Just like Eli, Samuel was too preoccupied with his ministry to properly oversee the spiritual upbringing of his own children.
  • God had made provision long before for His own anointed King, and had laid down specific regulations for the kingdom - Deut. 17:14-20
  • God and Samuel were displeased, about the people's request for a Kingdom patterned after the Nations around them. They did not wait for the God timing to appoint them the Kingdom HE declare in (Deut. 17:14-20).
  • Solemn warning: for this reason God gave the people a solemn warning on what their choice entailed.
  • In what ever we are doing, we should always see to the spiritual wellbeing of our children (seeds). They are the generation we will leave behind when the Lord call us to glory. It's our responsibility to bring them up in the way of the Lord. To many parents, it's their under age children that control them in the house - that is not God way, He wants us as parents to lead them not for them to lead us.
  • And, ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. - Ephesians 6:6.
